A Bit of a Maverick Streak: Daniel Pink
Some entrepreneurs are the business. Yes, so far I have mostly showcased entrepreneurs that own businesses, with corporate offices, large staffs, etc…in my “13 characteristics of successful entrepreneurs”. But, most companies in the United States aren’t big. Instead, they are single proprietors with small staffs (often just one person) and home offices. So, how do you succeed when you go it alone. You need a personal brand. You need to be a bit of a maverick. You need to learn a thing or two from Daniel Pink. Daniel Pink is an author and thought leader. He wrote Freeagent Nation to inspire the freeagents of the world to embrace going it alone. He wrote Whole New Mind, outlining why and how the future will be ruled by the Right Brainers. And, in his latest book he tackles career planning and discovery with his book The Adventures of Johnny Bunko. But, who really needs another career guide. They litter the shelves, fill the guidance counseling office at high schools and colleges and seem to be a dime a dozen. Well, that’s just it…they are a dime a dozen. And, well, dime a dozen doesn’t do very well if you’re an entrepreneur. So, yes, there really is the need for another career guide and Daniel Pink has shown by tackling it with a bit of a maverick streak there is a lot of business it it. Some maverick notes about The Adventures of Johnny Bunko:
- It was written entirely in Manga (Japanese comic); come on, who else has written a career guide in Manga?!
- It is story driven with characters and a plot rather than the same boring text and chapters and cr*p frankly
- It has been promoted with creativity, innovation and plenty of love…here is a favorite:
So, what do you have to learn from Daniel Pink and Johnny Bunko? For starters, remember these few tips: 1) Every market is crowded; be different or fail; 2) Try a lot of things and lot of things to promote a lot of things; after all, mavericks hit a lot of dry spots before striking oil; 3) The brand of “you” is important - build it and take care of it. Now go get wrangling and remember…as every good maverick knows…each dry spot is one dry spot closer to hitting it big.
