“Stance”-ing As “Brand”-ing

Richard Branson is the ultimate business rebel and has gained the admiration of business rebels across the planet. After all, besides the Virgin Group, who else gets away with selling wine, wedding dresses, music, mobile service, Health Insurance and Financial Services all under one umbrella. And, more importantly, how many male CEO’s of entrepreneurial companies can get away with prancing around New York’s Times Square in a wedding dress? Continue reading

Thinking about less thinking

There is something about mashed potatoes. Take a bunch of cheap potatoes, throw in way too much butter, a few hundred dashes of salt and garlic and pepper and, if you’re feeling especially carnivorous, some thick slab bacon (mmmm…bacon) and you transform potatoes into a gluttonous treat. And, what better day to indulge in a few too many mashed potatoes than Thanksgiving. After all, Thanksgiving is a day for excess (excess food, excess drink, excess sleep, etc…). But, this past Thanksgiving I was mid-bite of some yummy mashers when I realized it isn’t the excess that is great about Thanksgiving. Instead, it’s the yearly exercise in not being constrained by the many things that we are constrained by the rest of the year. We don’t watch what we eat. We don’t worry about falling asleep on the couch. We don’t limit our ability to get together with loved ones. Continue reading

A Rebel Thanks Giving

In grand ol’ tradition here in the States, it’s time to give thanks by stuffing ourselves silly on turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and rich, gooey pies. So it’s only fitting that we give thanks for all of those things that make being a rebel entrepreneur possible in this day and age. So, put down your knife and fork, politely turn down the television and join us as fellow Rebels in giving thanks that:

  • Because of cheap and fast technology development, there are fewer obstacles in getting great ideas to market
  • There are so many uncreative businesses out there that are content to get in the long line to zig that those that zag can have endless opportunity
  • Pumpkin milkshakes only come along once per year
  • The business world has woken up to the fact that figuring out how to sell one piece to 5 million people is as juicy as selling 5 million pieces to one person
  • Web 2.0 has been a catalyst in enabling companies to sell one piece to 5 million rather than having to focus on selling 5 million to one
  • The internet has enabled us to stay in touch with friends from all over the planet
  • The internet has enabled us to make friends that live all over the planet
  • Entrepreneurship continues to spread as a way to create wealth, end poverty and create opportunity
  • Wearing your passion on your sleeves is a good thing in today’s best companies
  • Companies can finally make products that people really want because companies are able to have real conversation with their customers
  • Dumb products are finally being called out as dumb products
  • Simplicity has been embraced
  • Company leaders are starting to make decisions with profit as only one of many considerations rather than the only one
  • Select companies are finally standing for something
  • There continue to be Davids no matter how large the Goliaths become

For that, and much more, we thank our fellow rebels for continuing to push the boundaries of life, business, and the web.

Taking Our Rebel Stance

You’re here and we appreciate you swinging by. We could find out how you arrived here because we are good at this whole internet thing and it pays our bills. But, you didn’t show up here to find out why you’re here but instead why we are. For that, we’ll keep things simple:

  • We believe in entrepreneurship.
  • We believe we have something fresh to say.
  • We like a good conversation and know that there are plenty of others out there that want to join in.
  • We have big ideas and want to share them with other people that have big ideas.
  • We see too few people take a stance and build their lives and their businesses around it.
  • We love the internet.
